I’m Mari Coelho and I am from São Paulo, Brazil, but I have been living in the Washington D.C. area since 2007. I am married to a Canadian guy of Lithuanian origin whose name is Romas. Together we raise 3 amazing little humans: Mateus, born in 2008, Julia, in 2011, and Cecilia, in 2015 (Mateus is pictured above at age 3).
In a past life I was a lawyer, when I escaped the office in the evenings in the pursuit of my culinary passion at the local cooking school (Escola Wilma Kovesi). Then love/life led me to Tunisia, Rio de Janeiro, Washington D.C. and Alexandria, VA. Along the way, I left the Law and embraced staying at home to raise our kids.
I am happiest in the kitchen, and I usually cook to the sound of Brazilian music. I like warm cakes and I keep left over birthday cakes in the freezer and warm them up in slices in the microwave. I love spending time with children and I love to cook with them (although I get a lot more cooking done when they are napping or playing, I admit).
I’m off to do more of what I love. I will hang out with my baby and kids and cook + blog in the “spare time” (ha-ha), sharing Brazilian recipes, stories, tips and finds, together with other culinary explorations of my eternal expat soul. From Brazil, Tunisia or Lithuania, or from the kitchens of our friends and family, I hope you enjoy cooking, feeding, gathering and sharing some of what you find here.
